PsychonautWiki (PW) is a community-driven encyclopaedia which is striving to formally document the field of psychonautics in a legitimate and comprehensive manner without depending upon metaphors, analogies, or personal experience reports.

Our documentation includes an extensive archive of well-organized content regarding the scientific information and harm reduction techniques behind all aspects of hallucinogenic substance usage as well as other areas of psychonautics.

This is presented alongside of an integrated subjective effect description index which is capable of breaking down the consistent experiences induced by specific compounds and pharmacological classes into easily readable terminologies, descriptions, leveling systems and example images.

The website is far from complete and still very much in progress (beta mode). It currently has a total of 710 articles, most of which can be found within our site map.

Objectives

Our primary motivations include:

  • documenting all aspects of psychonautics from a sceptical, reason-based, and scientific perspective and separating the field from its associated mysticism
  • minimizing danger, encouraging safe practices, and rectifying cultural taboos associated with personal use of psychoactive substances by providing accurate information without bias
  • utilizing open source software to facilitate content creation and the progressive goal-driven completion of this project
  • serving as a community-driven platform through which individuals of similar interests can discuss, collaborate, network, and organize

Participation

We welcome contributors and encourage those who wish to further our cause to register and collaborate with us. This can be done through the following methods:

  • engaging in constructive discussion with staff and community members via our active IRC
  • creating new articles and completing the tasks listed within our to-do list in accordance with our community guidelines
  • improving upon existing content by removing errors, grammar checking and adding additional information
  • kindly helping us fund and maintain our expensive server via bitcoin or paypal donations

History

PsychonautWiki was originally created to serve as a wider reaching, legitimate and community-driven version of the popular Tumblr blog known as Disregard Everything I Say. This blog was originally formed on August the 22nd of 2011[1] by the PW administrator known as Josikins. It was created with the intention of mapping out psychonautics and the hallucinogenic experience in a satisfactory level of formal description that remains seemingly non-existent within any of the current scientific literature.

As the blog expanded and grew, it became increasingly concerning that Tumblr was not going to be a suitable host for a project of this size. Thus on May the 11th of 2013, PW was founded under the original title of "Encyclopedia Psychonautica." The format of an open community-driven wiki was chosen so that anybody could contribute and so that the project could progress as quickly as possible. This was done with the hopes that it would one day become entirely self-sufficient in its own momentum.

The wiki was not made entirely public until August the 22nd of 2013[2] when it was launched as an incomplete project still in beta mode. The full release of Version 1.0 remains in progress to this day, but is quickly approaching completion.

Original notes

The images below show the original notes which devised the first plans for what has now become our extremely extensive subjective effects index and this entire project as a whole. These writings were written in summer 2011 by Josikins during a time in which she was working for a company in central London at age 17. They can be considered as the start of this entire project in its earliest form.

Over the years, a number of notepads have been filled up with preliminary articles and general musings. These are the foundation for which psychonautwiki is then later based upon. Two of these can be found in the imgur galleries here and here.

Founders

PsychonautWiki is run by a small team of staff who have each been mutually integral to the creation of this project. They primarily engage with each other both in person and through our IRC and can be collectively contacted at disregardeverythingisay@gmail.com.

These users are listed below in order of most to least contribution points as measured by our community high score board:

Smallavatar.png Oscarette - This user is in charge of front end editorial work such as proofreading, editing, quality control and grammar checking for both PW and DEIS. She is also responsible for general content production across the website, the formal documentation of PW's categorized subjective effects, website progression and the overall development of psychonautics into an established field of science
Josiii.PNG Josikins - This user is in charge of the formal documentation, description and organization of PW's categorized subjective effects, general content production across the website and the overall development of psychonautics into an established field of science.
Pj.png PJosepherum - This user is responsible for system administration including back end server management and integrity, front end design and usability, implementation of dynamic features and interfaces, maintaining our instance of MediaWiki and other software, content organisation, production, and quality control.
Cocosagan.png Cocoanatta - This user is partially responsible for website progression and maintenance, the formal documentation, description and organization of PW's categorized subjective effects, and the overall development of psychonautics into an established field of science as well as general content production across the website.
Kayleesmall.png Kaylee - This user is in charge of providing factual/accurate scientific information regarding the chemistry and pharmacology of psychoactive drugs including (but not limited to) their molecular structure and the relevant extractions or preparations needed to produce them.
Repli.png Replicatosaurus (inactive) - This user was previously responsible for the maintenance of our replication index and can be credited as the person responsible for originally creating the replications field of psychonautics.
Demfractals.png DemFractalsYo - (inactive) This user is partially responsible for our pharmacology, neuroscience and chemistry information and can be credited as the person responsible for originally creating our scientific information portal.

The PW logo was drawn by site founder Josikins, but was later improved upon and animated by a user known as Shpongulate. The original symbol, however, was created by the late theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler on page 209 of his 1983 paper Law Without Law. This symbol exists to serve as a visual representation of the most profound subjective effect component found within the entirety of the hallucinogenic experience, a state of unity and interconnectedness. The eye represents an observer and the line directly opposite represents that which it is perceiving within the "external" environment. The two sections are connected into each other via arrows to demonstrate that it is a singular and unified system in which the observer's identity is not separate from that which it perceives.
